Klinsmann's Statement

Ricardo Clark- back in.

Jurgen Klinsmann made a statement to the U.S. Soccer world with his roster selections...and a good statement it was. Klinsmann called up several players who have been noticibly absent from previous rosters in the past year and also showed a willingness to adopt new styles.

Amongst those called up were DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Edgar Castillo (Club America), Michael Orozco (San Luis) and Jose Torres (Pachuca). Notice anything about these names? Each of these players plies their trade in Mexico. This shows a clear indication that Klinsmann will enjoy a Latin flavor to the game against Mexico. It also shows he's willing to develop younger talent in Castillo and Orozco.


Jurgen Klinsmann seems to be looking for players to play with a natural flow and creativity to their game. Consider also that in addition to those that play in Mexico, Freddy Adu and Brek Shea have also been called up. Shea has been tearing MLS defenses apart with his brash play. Freddy Adu has never been one to conform his game to...well anything.

Creativity and attacking flair look to ecouraged under Klinsmann, which should be celebrated considering that apart from Clint Dempsey, the US team lacks audacity. It's nice to see that encouraged.

Jose Torres- back in.

There are several other things to notice about this roster. How about Michael Bradley's inclusion on the roster? This shouldnt come as a surprise to many, but it should put to rest those few (ridiculous) doubters who felt that Bob Bradley was only catering to his son.

DaMarcus Beasley- back in.

It's also interesting to see Ricardo Clark and Edson Buddle on the roster. Clark had a poor showing in the World Cup and then faded from sight afterwards while Buddle saw barely any time in the World Cup and then disappeared to the German second division. Klinsmann's choice to put them on the roster shows he's willing to give all a fresh start.

Last point of note is that Tim Chandler is on the roster. I like that.

Jurgen Klinsmann is making a statement with this roster. There are some reoccurring themes: fresh starts, creativity and a willingness to adopt a style of play. It's a positive sign, particularly in the first game against arch-rival Mexico. Fans should not concern themselves by the lack of Dempsey or Altidore on the roster. Both have club obligations and it opens the door to try new things (which is good).
