Mid-Week Recap Week 32

The first of the mid-week matches from week 32 recapped here by Pedro Gomes. This first match between Portland and DC held playoff implications for both.

DC United 1, Portland Timbers 1

The Portland Timbers traveled to RFK stadium to face the DC United in what felt like a must-win match for both sides, however technically Portland could have kept play-off hopes alive with only a draw. The DC united offense struggled in the first half and a miss-communication  in the midfield led to a turnover that eventually saw Portland's Rodney Wallace serve up a ball into the box from the left side of the field. Kenny Cooper got in between both DC centerbacks and headed it in to give Portland the 1-0 lead in the 24'.
DC United would finally find their groove in the 73' as Dwayne DeRosario got the equalizer from a nifty little left-footed shot in the box after a couple of quick touches to get by his defender and let off a shot that squeezed by near post. Portland almost pulled away in the 83' but Umony's shot in the box bounced off the underside of the crossbar and out to keep DC alive. DC continued to press for the winner and had a flurry of chances. It appeared they got the winner in the 89' but Blake Brettschneider's header was called offside. DC had a couple of other great chances but the Portland defense held. The 14,317 fans at RFK saw their team's post season dreams end in dramatic fashion and will have to wait to next year for another quest at the MLS Cup.

  1. The last 20 minutes of the game were as entertaining as I've ever seen of a MLS game. Both teams attacked with little concern of defending . I think DCU missed having Troy Perkins on their side, he killed their slim chances of the playoffs .
