Sporting Kansas City Too Much for Colorado

by Pedro Gomes

The Colorado Rapids headed into Live Strong Sporting Park to face Sporting Kansas City down 2 goals and a handful of starters. They had a difficult task ahead of them and the 18,565 fans and heavy rain were not going to make it any easier for them.  Sporting got the first couple of chances in the match and in the 28’ converted on one of those. A long Graham Zusi Free-kick was sent just in front of Colorado’s 6 yard box that Aurelien Collin was able to get his head on before the Keeper, Matt Pickens could punch it clear.
Colorado responded with more energy and got a couple of half chances at Sporting’s goal, but Jimmy Nielsen didn’t let any past him.  Collin nearly doubled his tally in the 58’, on a corner kick, but his foot poke bounced off the left post and the score remained 1-0 in favor of Sporting. Sporting eventually sealed Colorado’s fate in the 76’ off another Graham Zusi Free-kick.  Rookie of the Year nominee, C.J. Sapong, rose high above the crowd near the top of the 20 yard box and sent a vicious header over Matt Pickens to make it 2-0 on the game and 4-0 to Sporting on aggregate. The score line held and Sporting KC advances to the Eastern Conference Final to face either Philadelphia or Houston.

  1. Can you say injury-wrecked season for the Rapids? The first leg kept getting worse and worse as the game went on for the Rapids. Hopefully Smitty will return for them next season.
