MLS Mid-Week Recap

Article by Pedro Gomes

Montreal Impact 0, Toronto FC 3

The Montreal Impact hosted their bitter Canadian rivals, Toronto FC, at Stade Saputo in front of 14,412 blue and red clad supporters. The game started off with a few good attacking moments from both sides but neither could capitalize on any opportunity and the remainder of the half left little to get excited about. However, Toronto FC, opened the scoring up in emphatic fashion in the 52’ off a Torsten Frings Free Kick. Frings blasted his shot on a rope toward Donovan Ricketts, who made a feeble attempt to block the shot and it flew past his hands and into the net. A poor give-away in the back by Montreal’s, Patrice Bernier, eventually led to Toronto’s second goal in the 72’.

Toronto’s Nick Soolsma picked up the errant pass by Bernier and passed it off to Ryan Johnson near the top right sideof the box. Johnson stoped and sent a clever little left-footed shot right into the upper left corner of the net to give Toronto the 2-0 lead. Toronto would add a third goal in the 77’ when Danny Koevermans tapped in a cross a yard or two in front of goal that was sent in by Ashton Morgan from the left side of the field. Toronto would hold onto the lead and the clean sheet and earn only their second victory in the season.
