Vancouver Gains Valuable League Points

by Pedro Gomes

Vancouver Whitecaps 3, Houston Dynamo 1

The Vancouver Whitecaps hosted the Houston Dynamo at BC Place where 18,811 supporters were on hand to cheer the only MLS match-up of the weekend. It didn’t take long for the fans to have something to cheer about as Rookie sensation, Darren Mattocks, put away an early goal in just the 4th minute of the match. Mattocks got behind his defender on a sneaky little cross from Y.P. Lee the Mattocks had to simply deflect into the back of the net from a few yards out.

Mattocks found the back of the net again in the 66’ as Gershan Koffie sent a wonderful outside of the boot through ball to Mattocks in behind the defense. Mattocks finished the play with a calm side footed finish to the far side netting to give Vancouver the 2-0 lead. Houston would threaten for a possible draw as they found a goal late in the 83’ off a side volley from second half substitute, Macoumba Kandji. Kandji did well to side volley a Brian Ownby cross into the box to put pressure on the Vancouver defense.

However, a few minutes later, Vancouver put the game away with a goal by Jordan Harvey on a far post cross that was not cleared by the Houston defense. Harvey took advantage of some poor defending and sealed the match for Vancouver.
